Multi-Cam Switch in Premiere Assistant

This guide walks you through setting up and using Multi-cam switch in Premiere Assistant to sync, transcribe, and cut your multi-camera footage automatically.

Written by Nandita Kothari

Step 1. Prepare your Premiere timeline

Before opening Premiere Assistant, set up your timeline correctly in Premiere.

  1. Open a new project and add your audio and video files to the sequence. Place video and audio on separate tracks.
Important: Do not use Premiere's [Multi-Camera Source Sequence] feature. Place video and audio on separate tracks instead.

  2. Sync your clips. Select all clips, right-click, and choose [Synchronize]. You can sync by timecode or audio.

  3. Normalize audio levels across microphones if needed.

Step 2. Configure multi-cam settings and transcribe your sequence

  1. In Premiere Assistant, click [Edit multi-cam] from the panel menu.

  2. Configure the multi-cam transcription settings:

    • Range: Choose which part of the sequence to transcribe: [Whole sequence], [Select Clip], or [In/Out].

    • Language: Select the language spoken in the video.

    • Speakers: Choose how many speakers are in the video.

      • [One person]: For a single speaker.

      • [Multiple]: For multiple speakers. Choose [Audio separated] (each speaker has their own mic) or [Audio not separated] (all speakers share one audio track).

    • Video: Select [Multi cameras] and choose which video tracks to include.

  3. Click [Transcribe video to edit multi-cam] to start.

Step 3. Review and edit

After transcription, Premiere Assistant opens the multi-cam edit view. Each segment shows the assigned speaker and video track.

  1. Review the transcript and make any edits.

  2. To change who is speaking or which camera shows for a segment, click the speaker or video track label next to the segment and reassign.

  3. To make bulk changes, drag to select multiple segments at once.

  4. To adjust video track priority, click [Multi-camera Settings] at the bottom of the panel.
Tip: Use keyboard shortcuts to switch speaker or camera quickly: Change speaker: Option + 1-9 (Mac) / Alt + 1-9 (Windows). Change camera: 1-9.

Step 4. Apply to sequence

  1. Click [Apply to sequence] and choose whether to apply to the original sequence or copy it to a new one.

  2. Choose what to apply: Trimming edits, Multi-cam edits, and/or Enable speaker audio only (mutes all audio except the active speaker's track; available when using Audio separated).

  3. Click [Apply] to confirm.

If you need to undo, click [Time Machine] in the toolbar to revert to the state before applying.

Step 5. Add captions by speaker

  1. Click the [Edit Captions] tab in Premiere Assistant.

  2. Review and edit captions as needed. See Text-Based Video Editing.

  3. Click [Apply to sequence] > [Add Captions].

  4. Choose a caption type: [Premiere caption track], [Animated Captions], or [Captions with speaker name].

Troubleshooting

Can I use Premiere's Multi-Camera Source Sequence with Premiere Assistant?

No. Premiere Assistant does not support nested sequences or Premiere's built-in Multi-Camera Source Sequence feature. Multi-cam switch only works when each camera angle is placed on a separate track in your timeline. See Step 1 above for how to set up your timeline correctly.

The number of tracks in Premiere Assistant doesn't match what I see in Premiere

Click [Reload] in Premiere Assistant to refresh the track list.
