Import Footage and Start a Project

Learn how to add footage to Selects and start a new project, including what happens after your files are imported.

Written by Nandita Kothari

You shot 12 hours of interview footage across three cameras. Now you need to organize it, sync it, and find the moments that matter. Selects handles that entire first phase.

Import your video and audio files

When you open Selects, you see a home screen with an Drop files or folder area in the center. To import your files, you can:

  • Drag and drop individual video files, a folder, or a mix of video and audio files.

  • Click to select files or folders from your computer.

For project size limits and supported file formats, see

Once you drop your files, Selects begins scanning. Selects reads each file, detects its type (video, audio, or image), and automatically starts organizing. This typically takes a few minutes, depending on the number and size of your files.

Each import creates one project. To start a new project, go back to the home screen and drop in a new set of files.

Tip: Add only the files you need for your rough cut. Excluding unused source files speeds up AI analysis.

Source files

All the files you added appear in the same folder structure as on your computer. If you added multiple folders, the files are grouped inside their folders. You can see the total file count for each folder next to the folder name. You can also switch from the default list view to gallery view to see thumbnails. Double-click a source file to preview it. To add more files or folders, drag and drop them here at any time.

Note: Add all your files before starting the AI analysis step. This ensures every file is fully analyzed. You can still add B-roll and audio after analysis, but they will not receive image analysis.

Main timeline

This is where you add your A-roll and audio files to sync them.

Top bar

The top bar shows the total number of files and the total media duration of all imported files. Click the (i) icon to open the Overview of media to analyze panel.

This panel shows your files grouped by type: Main timeline, B-roll, and Music & SFX. It includes the file count and media duration for each. Use it to confirm which files will be analyzed before you start. Note that Music & SFX files are not analyzed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much footage can it work on?

There are two types of limits applied to a project in Selects:

  • Total footage (all tracks combined): Up to 40 hours. This is the sum of all your camera track lengths. For example, 5 cameras × 8 hours each = 40 hours total.

  • Timeline length: Up to 10 hours. This is the total playback length of your project: the combined duration of all clips placed end to end on the timeline. Whether it's one long recording or hundreds of short clips joined together, the total cannot exceed 10 hours.

If your timeline exceeds 10 hours, split the project and sync each part independently.

Can I add files after creating a project?

Yes, you can add more files after creating a project, but they won't be AI-analyzed. Add everything you want analyzed before you create the project.
