Edit Your Images Using AI Tools

Learn how to use Premiere Assistant's AI tools to remove backgrounds, upscale, resize, and touch up your images.

Written by Nandita Kothari

Step 1. Open the image editor

In the Premiere Assistant panel, go to Resources and click [Upload image] to add a photo from your computer, or click any of the four AI tool icons to go straight to that tool in the editor.

Step 2. Add an image

Inside the image editor, you have two ways to add your image:

  1. Drag and drop a file into the editor, or click inside the box to paste one you've copied.

  2. Click [Capture Image] to automatically take a screenshot of the frame your playhead is currently on in Premiere. The captured image will appear in the editor ready to use.

Tip: If you don't see your image after adding it, scroll down in the panel or expand the Premiere Assistant window. Undocking the panel gives you more space to work.

Caution: Going back to a different panel will erase any images you've created. Download your image or add it to your sequence before navigating away.

Step 3. Apply an AI tool

Select the tool you want from the tabs at the top of the editor:

  • [Remove background] removes the background from your image while keeping the main subject.

  • [Upscale] increases the resolution of a low-quality or pixelated image.

  • [Swap Layout] converts your image between landscape and portrait orientation without cropping the original image.

  • [Inpaint] lets you remove or replace specific parts of your image using AI.

Step 4. Download or add to your sequence

Once the effect is applied, the processed image appears in the editor. Click it to open a preview, then click the download button to save it to your computer. To add it directly to your Premiere timeline, click [Add to sequence] in the top right corner.

Note: Looking to remove the background from a video clip instead? See Remove Video Background.

Troubleshooting

I get an error when using [Upscale]

[Upscale] is designed for low-resolution images. If you see an error, check that your image is not too high in resolution. Only images up to 1,048,576 pixels are supported.

I get an error when using [Swap Layout]

If you see an error when using [Swap Layout], check that your image is within the size limit. The maximum supported pixel count is 9,437,184 pixels.
