🚀 Try out the new Selects: a full AI-native video editor

Find out how to build your own editing apps with chat, what else is new in Selects, and how to turn on the beta.

Written by Nandita Kothari

Selects is growing from a prep tool into a full video editor built around AI. In the new Selects, you can build any editing tool you need just by asking chat, and finish your whole edit without leaving Selects. Show it a video you love. Get yours edited the same way.

The new Selects is in beta and will soon become the standard version for everyone. Until then, you can turn it on anytime with your regular subscription, and switch back to the current version whenever you like.

Note: We're building the new Selects together with our beta testers, so expect some rough edges. Your projects stay on your computer whichever version you use.

Build your own apps in Selects 🤩

The biggest change in the new Selects is that you can build your own editing tools. Describe the tool you need in chat, and Selects builds it as an app, right inside the editor. No code, no plugin hunting. It's vibe coding, made for video editors.

Sure, you could try to vibe code a whole video editor from scratch. We thought so too, until we hit the technical side of video: sync, codecs, proxies, multi-cam, audio, and exports. So we did that groundwork for you. Selects handles the hard parts, and you and your AI agent build the editor of your dreams on top.

The essentials, like text-based editing, syncing, multi-cam switching, adding customized captions, silence detection and removal, cutting filler words, etc., are already built in. Everything else is yours to build.

Think about your own workflow for a second.

  • Have you ever repeated the same clicks so often you wished there was one button for it?

  • Have you ever bought a plugin just to do one thing your editing app couldn't?

  • Have you ever used a plugin that almost does what you need, but not quite?

  • Have you ever had an editing rule you wish your software just knew?

A few ideas to get you started:

  • Graphic captions from a reference image: Show chat a caption style you like and get an app that recreates it on your video, fully editable. No building caption templates from scratch.

  • Graphics inspired by videos you love: Spotted a graphic in your favorite YouTuber's video and want your own take on it? Build an app that takes a screenshot or a YouTube link and creates an editable version in your style. No hunting for the right motion graphics template, no building from scratch.

  • A music browser: Search your stock music library and drop tracks straight onto the timeline.

  • Client notes to markers: Paste timecoded feedback and get markers on your draft, one color per reviewer.

Whatever that feature is for you, describe it in chat and Selects builds it as an app. You can change any app you install, or build a new one from scratch. See how in Build your first app below.

🎉 One app, one subscription. All the manual editing tools you'd expect from any editing app, plus custom captions, short-form clipping, and top AI models for video, voice, and images, and more, all built in. No API keys or separate accounts: everything runs on your Selects credits, so you can drop the extra subscriptions!

🙌🏻 Any style, a click away. Start from ready-made templates and trending looks, or show chat a video you love and get yours edited the same way.

Finishing your edit is now possible in Selects

The new Selects also lets you do the finishing work you used to do in your editing software:

  • Effects and transitions: Add text, stickers, zooms, filters, sound effects, and transitions from the [Effects] app.

  • Color grading: Grade clips with basic sliders, HSL, color wheels, and curves in the [Adjust] tab, or start from a ready-made filter.

  • Motion graphics: Ask chat for animated titles and graphics. They land on your timeline as clips you can fine-tune in the [Adjust] tab.

  • Captions: Add captions with the [Captions] app, pick a style, and fine-tune it down to word-by-word highlighting.

  • Clip adjustments: Set position, scale, rotation, and opacity with keyframes, change clip speed and duration, and add masks in the [Adjust] tab.

  • Generated media: Create video, voiceovers, and images with the [Generate video], [Generate audio], and [Generate image] apps, using popular models like Seedance, Kling, ElevenLabs, MiniMax, and Topaz, with more on the way. It all runs on your Selects credits, so there's no need to subscribe to each service separately.

  • The finished video: Export straight from Selects, with every edit applied.

We add new tools all the time, and anything that isn't there yet, you can build yourself.

How to turn on the new Selects

To turn on the new Selects, use the button at the top of the Home screen.

  1. On the Home screen, click [Try the new Selects] at the top.

  2. Click [Restart now]. Selects restarts in the new version.

To go back to the current version, click your profile icon in the top right of the Home screen, switch off [Try the new Selects], and click [Restart now]. Your projects stay put, and apps you built stay in the [Apps] tab, but anything that needs the new version stops working until you switch back.

Note: If you don't see [Try the new Selects] on the Home screen, update Selects to the latest version.

Build your first app

To build your first app, start from one that already exists or describe a new one in chat. Your apps live in the [Apps] tab of the project panel.

  1. Open a project, click the [Apps] tab, then click [View all] to browse the app library.

  2. Click an app close to what you need, click [Install this app], then tell chat what to change, like "add a slider for caption size."

  3. To build something new, tell chat what the app should do, like "Build an app that turns my client's timecoded notes into markers on this draft." For a starting prompt, click [Create template] on the Home screen.

You can also save how you edit as a skill: tell chat your editing rules once, and it follows them in every new project. If an app shows an error, click [Fix with assistant] and chat fixes it.

Tip: Give each app one job, and start with the task you repeat most.

FAQs

Does the new Selects cost extra?

The new Selects works with your regular subscription, and turning it on doesn't cost anything. Chat, including building apps, uses Selects credits or your connected Claude or ChatGPT subscription, the same as today. Generating video, audio, or images also uses credits, and the generation tools show the estimated cost before you start. Learn more in Which AI setup should you use in Selects?

Can I still hand off my edit to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve?

Yes, handing off to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve works as before, but only the edit itself carries over: your cuts, clip placement, timelines, project structure, and transcript. Color grading, filters, overlays, motion graphics, transitions, transform adjustments, and volume changes stay behind. The panels for these edits show an [Export only] badge, and Selects warns you before a handoff. To keep them, export the video from Selects instead.

Can I share an app I built with other editors?

Sharing apps with other editors isn't available yet. If you build an app or skill you're proud of and think other editors would want it too, let us know through [Feedback] on the Home screen.

Is it safe to install apps?

Apps run on your computer and, like any software, can open files and run programs. Only install apps from the app library or from people you trust. Library apps are marked [Experimental], and some need extra software or only work on Mac, so check an app's page first.

How do I send feedback or report a bug in the new Selects?

To send feedback or report a bug in the new Selects, click [Feedback] on the Home screen to chat with us, and ask for a human agent. We're building the new Selects with our beta testers, so tell us what works, what doesn't, and what you wish it did. A screenshot helps.
