The [AI image] app creates images with AI and places them on your timeline. Describe what you want, or add reference images and describe the change. Generating uses Selects credits.
How to generate an image
To generate an image, open a draft, then fill in the form.
Open the draft you want the image added to.
In the project panel, click the [Apps] tab, then click [AI image].
Choose a [Model].
Write your prompt, up to 4,000 characters.
Set [Aspect] and, where the model offers it, [Resolution].
Set [Images] to make 1 to 4 images in one go.
Click [Generate].
The image generates in the background. When it's done, Selects saves it to your Downloads folder, or the folder set in [Save media to], adds it to your project, and places it above your video, at the spot where the playhead was when you clicked [Generate].
Caution: Your project reads the image from the saved file. If you move or delete that file, the clip goes offline.
Note: To choose where generated media is saved, open [Settings] from your profile avatar and change [Save media to] under [General]. It starts at [Downloads]. Switch to [Project source folder] to save next to each project's footage, or click [Choose folder…] to pick a folder of your own. If Selects can't save there, the file goes to your Downloads folder. This setting needs the latest version of the Selects app.
Edit an image, or match a reference
To edit an image or keep a character consistent, add it as a reference. Under [Add references], click the + and choose [Add selected clip], [Add current frame], or [Add file]. You can also pick a file from your project in the same menu, or choose [Avatar] to use one of the avatars you made in the Avatars app. Then describe the change and point at the image with @, for example "@Image1 on a rainy street at night".
[Add current frame] grabs the frame under the playhead, which is a quick way to turn a shot from your edit into a still you can restyle.
Choose a model
Model | Good for | Options |
Nano Banana Pro | Keeping a character consistent across references, up to 4K | Reference images and [Resolution] |
GPT Image 2 | Fine detail, readable text, and transparent backgrounds | Reference images, [Resolution], [Quality], and [Background] |
Seedream 5 Pro | Photoreal scenes, fast | Reference images |
These are the models Selects suggests, and they show first in the list. To find more from our AI provider, such as models that upscale an image or remove its background, open [Model] and type in [Search models]. That list changes over time.
Tip: For a logo or graphic you want to lay over video, choose GPT Image 2 and set [Background] to [Transparent].
How credits work
When the model can be priced in advance, the credit cost shows just above [Generate]. Some models can't be priced before they run. In that case no estimate shows, and the credits charged appear under [Recent] once it's done. Click the result to see them.
If you don't have enough credits, click [Get credits] to open your plan page. When a cost shows, [Generate] stays unavailable until you have enough.
Find or retry a generation
Your last 3 image generations in this project show under [Recent]. Open one to [Copy prompt], [Try again] (refills the form without starting), or [Retry import] if the image generated but didn't reach your project. While an image is still preparing or generating, [Cancel] asks to stop it.
FAQs
Can I upscale an image in Selects?
You can upscale an image with one of our AI provider's upscaling models. In [AI image], open [Model], search for "upscale", and pick a model. Then add your image in the box the model shows, such as [Image], and click [Generate]. The models Selects suggests don't upscale, so for a sharper image from them, generate at a higher [Resolution]. To upscale video, use [AI video], then [Edit], then [Upscale].
Can I make an image with a transparent background?
You can make an image with a transparent background with the GPT Image 2 model. Set [Background] to [Transparent] before you click [Generate].
Where did my generated image go?
Your generated image is on your draft's timeline, above the video, at the spot where the playhead was when you clicked [Generate]. It's also in your project panel and in your Downloads folder, or the folder set in [Save media to].
Why does Selects say "Select a timeline to work on"?
Selects shows "Select a timeline to work on" when your project has drafts but none is open, for example while a synced timeline is on screen. Open a draft so Selects knows where to place the image, then click [Generate] again. In a project with no draft yet, Selects creates one for you and places the image there.
