Export your edit to editing software, or as a transcript or video

Learn how to hand off your edit to Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve, and how to export a transcript or a video straight from Selects.

Written by Nandita Kothari

When your edit is ready for color, sound, or final delivery, Selects hands it off as a native project file. Your cuts, structure, and labels come across, and your original media is never touched.

Open the export menu

The [Export] button sits in the top right of the editor. Click it to open the menu.

  • If you have set a main editing tool, its icon sits beside [Export]. Click the icon to hand off straight to that tool.

  • To choose your main editing tool, right-click [Export] and pick one under [Main editing tool]. Choose [Hide] to remove the tool icon.

The menu starts with an [Export] section with [Video] and [Transcript]. [Audio] also shows when a draft has sound but nothing on screen, and saves a .wav file. Below it, [Handoff to] lists [Adobe Premiere], [Final Cut Pro], and [DaVinci Resolve]. A [Socials] section also lists [TikTok] and [YouTube], so you can publish a finished video straight from Selects.

Note: With more than one draft in the project, Selects asks which ones to hand off. All of them are selected to begin with, so handing off without changing anything takes every draft across.

Handoff runs in the background, so you can keep working while it writes. Progress shows in the top bar, and you can cancel it from there. When the file is written, a Handoff is ready dialog appears. Click [Open folder] to reveal it in Finder or File Explorer.

Choose where files are saved

Every handoff and export dialog has a [Save in] row that sets where the file lands. It starts at your Desktop and remembers your last choice, so you are not picking a folder every time.

Choose your editing software

Each tool gets its own project file and its own handoff settings:

What transfers

Clip references point to your original files where they already live, so your editing software links to the real media and your originals are never modified.

Your edit points, track layout, and speaker labels come across. In Adobe Premiere, clip color labels also come across on every media track, not only Main. Topic titles arrive as markers or as captions, or not at all, depending on the settings you choose when you hand off. Effects, transitions, color, text and graphics, keyframes, position and scale changes, and volume changes you add in Selects do not carry over. Selects warns you before the handoff when it finds transitions, keyframes, effects, or graphics. To keep them, export a video instead.

Note: Audio level changes you make in Selects do not carry into the handoff. Clips arrive at their original levels, so redo any volume work in your editing software.

Export a synced timeline

You can export a synced timeline on its own, straight from its tab in the editor. Selects saves a project file that holds only that synced timeline and its clips, without your drafts.

  1. Open the synced timeline. In the [Project] panel, right-click it and choose [Edit synced timeline]. It opens as a tab with a SYNC badge before its name.

  2. Right-click the synced timeline tab.

  3. Click [Export to (tool name)], for example [Export to Adobe Premiere]. The menu names the main editing tool you have set. If you have not set one, the item reads [Handoff] and asks which tool to use.

  4. For Adobe Premiere only, choose your [Premiere version] (2024, 2025, or 2026), set [Nest multi-cam], and click [Export].

  5. Choose where to save the file. It is named after your project and saved as a .prproj, .fcpxml, or .drp file, depending on your tool.

When the file is saved, Selects shows Project file saved.

In Adobe Premiere, [Nest multi-cam] decides how the synced timeline arrives:

  • On: it stays a nested multi-cam sequence.

  • Off: it is flattened into an ordinary sequence.

DaVinci Resolve always receives it as an ordinary timeline.

Note: Exporting a synced timeline does not use the [Save in] row or the Handoff is ready dialog. Selects asks where to save the file each time.

Export a transcript

You can pull the transcript out on its own, without handing off the whole project.

  1. Open the timeline you want, either a stringout or any draft.

  2. Click [Export] in the top right and choose [Transcript].

  3. If the project has more than one draft, choose the ones you want. The draft you have open is selected to begin with.

  4. Pick a format: [Transcript text file] or [Caption SRT file].

  5. For a text file, choose what to include: [Timecode], [Chapter title], [Speaker name]. You can tick any combination. [Speaker name] only shows when a draft has more than one speaker.

  6. Click [Export].

Export a video

Selects can render a video straight out of the app, useful for review copies before you move to your editing software.

  1. Click [Export] in the top right and choose [Video].

  2. Choose one or more drafts that you want to export.

  3. Choose a resolution: [4K], [FHD], or [HD].

  4. Choose a [Frame rate]. It defaults to your project's own rate, or pick 24, 25, 30, 50, or 60 fps.

  5. Set where the file goes in [Save in]. Selects checks your free disk space first and tells you how much the export needs.

  6. Click [Export].

Export video dialog with Save in set to Desktop, Resolution set to 4K, and the Frame rate menu open showing Project (25 fps), 24, 25, 30, 50, and 60 fps

When the export starts, an [Exporting video] progress bar appears under the [Export] button in the top right, over your video, for a few seconds. It then folds into the circular icon in the top bar, which shows progress until the export finishes. The [Export] button stays available during an export, so the button alone does not tell you whether one is running. When an export finishes, a [Video is ready] window opens. If you export several videos in a row, they collect in that one window.

FAQs

Can I keep working while a handoff runs?

Yes, you can keep working while a handoff runs. It works in the background and reports progress in the top bar, where you can also cancel it.

How do I know if my export is still running?

To check whether your export is still running, look at the circular icon in the top bar. It shows progress until the export finishes. The [Exporting video] bar under the [Export] button only shows for a few seconds when the export starts.

Do overlays transfer when I hand off?

No. Overlays are specific to Selects and are not included in the exported file.

Can I choose which drafts to hand off?

Yes. With more than one draft, [Select timelines to handoff] opens and you choose what goes across. Everything is selected to begin with, so clicking straight through hands off all of them, and you can clear anything you do not want. With a single draft there is nothing to choose and it goes straight across.

Does my audio mix come across?

No. Volume changes made in Selects are not applied to the handed-off project, so clips arrive at their original levels. Set your levels in your editing software.

Can I publish to TikTok or YouTube from Selects?

Yes. Click [Export] in the title bar, then choose [TikTok] or [YouTube] under [Socials]. Pick a timeline or video, connect your account, set the title, caption, and visibility, then publish. You can publish up to 10 videos or timelines to one platform together. Publishing to YouTube needs the latest version of the Selects app. See Publish your video to TikTok from Selects and Publish your video to YouTube from Selects.
