Generate images in Selects

Learn how to create an image from a prompt or edit one from references in the Generate image app, and where the result lands.

Written by Nandita Kothari

The [Generate image] app creates images with AI and places them on your timeline. Describe what you want, or add reference images and describe the change. Generating uses Selects credits.

How to generate an image

To generate an image, open a draft, then fill in the form.

  1. Open the draft you want the image added to.

  2. In the project panel, click the [Apps] tab, then click [Generate image].

  3. Choose a [Model].

  4. Write your prompt, up to 4,000 characters.

  5. Set [Aspect] and, where the model offers it, [Resolution].

  6. Set [Images] to make 1 to 4 images in one go.

  7. Click [Generate].

The image generates in the background. When it's done, Selects saves it to your computer's Downloads folder, adds it to your project, and places it above your video, at the spot where the playhead was when you clicked [Generate].

Caution: Your project reads the image from the file in your Downloads folder. If you move or delete that file, the clip goes offline.

Edit an image, or match a reference

To edit an image or keep a character consistent, add it as a reference. Under [Add references], click the + and choose [Add current frame], [Add selected clip], or [Add file]. Then describe the change and point at the image with @, for example "@Image1 on a rainy street at night".

[Add current frame] grabs the frame under the playhead, which is a quick way to turn a shot from your edit into a still you can restyle.

How credits work

When the model can be priced in advance, the credit cost shows just above [Generate]. Some models can't be priced before they run. In that case no estimate shows, and the credits charged appear on the result under [Recent] once it's done.

If you don't have enough credits, click [Get credits] to open your plan page. When a cost shows, [Generate] stays unavailable until you have enough.

Find or retry a generation

Your last 3 image generations in this project show under [Recent]. Open one to [Copy prompt], [Try again] (refills the form without starting), or [Retry import] if the image generated but didn't reach your project.

FAQs

Can I upscale an image in Selects?

Selects doesn't upscale images. Upscaling is for video, under [Generate video], then [Edit], then [Upscale]. For a sharper image, generate it at a higher [Resolution].

Can I make an image with a transparent background?

You can make an image with a transparent background with the GPT Image 2 model. Set [Background] to [Transparent] before you click [Generate].

Where did my generated image go?

Your generated image is on your draft's timeline, above the video, at the spot where the playhead was when you clicked [Generate]. It's also in your project panel and your computer's Downloads folder.

Why does Generate say "Select a timeline to work on"?

Generate shows "Select a timeline to work on" when no draft is open. Open a draft so Selects knows where to place the image, then click [Generate] again.
