Graphics in Selects: add text, captions, stickers, and MOGRT templates

Learn how to add text, caption looks, and stickers to a draft with the Graphics app, and how to import your own Premiere MOGRT templates.

Written by Nandita Kothari

The [Graphics] app holds everything you put on top of your video: text, caption looks, and stickers. You can also import motion graphics templates (MOGRT files) made in Premiere and use them like any other graphic. Find it in the [Apps] tab of the project panel.

Two screens side by side. Step 1 marks the Apps tab in the project panel, step 2 marks the Graphics app tile. The second screen shows the open Graphics app with imported templates Modern Title, Film Title and Bold Title under Custom, then the Text section.

Note: Graphics work on drafts. If you see "Open a draft to apply this.", open a draft first.

What's in the Graphics app

The Graphics app lists its graphics in sections, from top to bottom.

Hover a tile to preview it. Click the star on a tile to keep it under Favorites. Favorites and Custom show up once they have something in them.

To find a graphic by name, click the magnifier at the top of the app, [Search graphics], and type. Click the × or press Esc to close the search and see every graphic again.

The Graphics app search box with 'title' typed in. Results show Modern Title, Film Title and Bold Title under Custom and Title card under Text.

How to add a graphic

To add a graphic, hover its tile and click [Add], or drag the tile onto the timeline. Clicking the tile itself only previews it.

Import a Premiere template (MOGRT)

You can bring in a motion graphics template made in Premiere (a .mogrt file) and use it like any other graphic.

  1. Open the Graphics app and click the + at the top, [Add graphic].

  2. Click [Import Premiere MOGRT].

  3. Choose one or more .mogrt files.

The Graphics app add menu. Step 1 marks the plus button, step 2 marks Import Premiere MOGRT, below the note 'Add a reference in chat to recreate the graphic'.

You can also drag .mogrt files from your computer straight onto the Graphics app.

While Selects converts the files, the + turns into a spinner. Each template lands under Custom, ready to add. Imported templates are saved on this computer and show up in every project.

What can be imported:

  • Templates made in Premiere. Templates made in After Effects can't be imported yet.

  • Templates whose effects Selects can recreate. A template that uses an effect or feature Selects doesn't support yet can't be imported.

If a file can't be imported, Selects lists it after the import with the reason. If a template uses fonts that aren't installed on this computer, the same list names them. Install those fonts, then restart Selects, for an accurate preview.

The MOGRT import notices dialog listing Bold Title.mogrt, Modern Title.mogrt and Film Title.mogrt, each with 'Install these original fonts for an accurate preview' and the font name, and a Close button.

Note: Selects rebuilds each template rather than using Premiere's own render, and a few effects are close matches rather than exact ones. Check the result in the preview before you export.

Edit or remove a graphic

To edit a graphic, select its clip on the timeline and open the [Adjust] tab on the right.

Selects with the imported Bold Title template on the timeline. Step 1 points at its clip on track V2, step 2 marks the Adjust tab, which shows Position, Opacity and the template's Text settings. The preview shows 'Your Title Here' and 'EPISODE' over the video.

Save your own graphics

To reuse text, a sticker, an imported template, or a caption look you styled, save it from the [Adjust] tab.

  1. Select the clip and click [Save as preset] in [Adjust].

  2. Give it a name with at least one letter or number.

  3. Click [Save to Graphics].

The Save to Graphics dialog with the line 'Keep this graphic to use in any project.', a Name box reading Bold Title, a Tab picker set to Graphics, and Cancel and Save to Graphics buttons.

Saved graphics appear under Custom, near the top of the Graphics app. Caption looks always go to the Graphics app. For other graphics, you can pick a tab of the Effects app under [Tab] instead.

To delete a saved graphic or an imported template, hover it in the Graphics app and click the trash icon, [Remove preset]. It's removed right away.

Note: Saved graphics, imported templates, and favorites live on your computer and work in every project. They aren't part of the project file.

Export your graphics

Everything you add in the Graphics app is rendered into your video when you click [Export], then [Video]. Graphics don't carry over when you hand off to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve. Click [Export only] at the bottom of the Graphics app to see what a handoff supports. Learn more in Export your edit to editing software, or as a transcript or video.

FAQs

Where did text and stickers go in the Effects app?

Text, caption looks, and stickers have their own app now: [Graphics], in the [Apps] tab. The Effects app keeps transitions, zooms, clip effects, filters, and sound effects.

Can I import After Effects templates?

Not yet. Selects imports MOGRT templates made in Premiere. If you import one made in After Effects, Selects shows "This template was not authored in Premiere Pro. Only Premiere Pro templates are currently supported."

Why doesn't my imported template look exactly like it does in Premiere?

There are two common reasons. The template may use fonts that aren't installed on this computer, so Selects names them after the import. Install them, then restart Selects. Or the template may use an effect that Selects recreates as a close match rather than an exact one.

Can I use my imported templates on another computer?

Imported templates are saved on the computer you imported them on. To use one on another computer, import the .mogrt file there too.

Do graphics use credits?

The built-in graphics and imported MOGRT templates don't use credits. Asking chat to make or recreate a graphic uses Selects credits, unless you connect your own Claude or ChatGPT plan.

Do my graphics show up in Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve?

Graphics don't show up in Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve after a handoff. Text, caption looks, stickers, and imported templates arrive as gaps. To keep them, export a video from Selects.
