How to find and use apps in Selects

Learn where apps live in Selects, what each built-in app does, and what you can find in Explore.

Written by Nandita Kothari

Apps are the tools that do one job for you in Selects, like tightening pauses, adding captions, or generating a shot. They live in the [Apps] tab of the project panel, beside [Project].

Open and organize your apps

To open an app, click the [Apps] tab at the top of the project panel, then click the app's icon. Apps sit in a grid, with your favorites in their own band at the top. Each app opens in its own tab beside [Project] and [Apps], so you can keep several open and switch between them.

The Apps tab in Selects. Step 1 marks the Apps tab and step 2 marks the Captions app. Starred apps, here Effects and Captions, sit in their own band at the top, above the grid with Explore, AI audio, AI image, AI video, Avatars, Check names and terms, Clip highlights, Cut filler words, Epidemic Sound, Remove silence, Speaker audio settings, Stock media and Sync tools. The All menu is at the top left and the search icon at the top right.
  • Search: Click the magnifier at the top right of the grid. Search also matches the words inside an app, so "punctuation" finds Captions. It searches inside the category you picked.

  • Filter by category: Click [All] at the top left of the grid and choose a category. [Edit] holds Remove silence, Cut filler words, Speaker audio settings, and Sync tools. [Text] holds Captions and Check names and terms. [Visuals] holds Effects and Clip highlights. [Media] holds AI audio, AI image, AI video, Avatars, Epidemic Sound, and Stock media. [Custom] holds the apps you added, and shows once you have one. Favorites sit on top, and the other apps are listed A to Z.

  • Favorite: Right-click an app and choose [Add to favorites]. Favorites move to the top of the grid, with a star on their icon. To undo, choose [Remove from favorites].

An app right-clicked in the Apps grid, with a box around Add to favorites. The menu also lists Change icon and Open in new window.
  • Change the icon: Right-click an app and choose [Change icon]. Pick a color, or click [Choose image] to use your own picture.

  • Open in its own window: Right-click an app and choose [Open in new window]. To bring it back, click [Bring back here] in the app's tab, choose [Dock panel] from the same menu, or close the window.

  • Delete an app you added: Right-click it and choose [Delete]. This removes the app's folder from your computer and can't be undone. Built-in apps can't be deleted.

Note: Favorites, icon colors, and pictures are saved on your computer. They don't travel with the project.

Note: Most apps work on the draft you have open. If you see "Select a timeline to work on", open a draft first, then try again.

Clip highlights

Clip highlights gives you ready-made templates, built by the Selects team, that you can use with your own footage.

  1. In the [Apps] tab, click [Clip highlights].

  2. Hover a template and click [Recreate].

Two screens side by side. Left: the Apps tab with step 1 on Apps and step 2 on Clip highlights. Right: the Clip highlights app open with the DOAC Style template hovered, and step 3 on its Recreate button.
  3. Add what the template asks for under What you need. Some templates use the draft you have open, and some ask you to add clips or photos. To let Selects pick the clips, click [Auto select]. If some of your files aren't analyzed yet, it offers to analyze them first, which uses credits, and adds the clips when the analysis is done.

  4. Click [Apply].

Selects builds the edit in the background, so you can keep working. When it's done, the result is either applied to your draft or waiting in a new timeline.

Note: If a template shows "May use credits." under [Apply], running it can use Selects credits. A template that works on a draft needs one with only video and audio on it, with no captions, graphics, or effects yet.

Explore

Explore is the first tile in the [Apps] grid when [All] is chosen, right after your favorites. Click it to open a window of example AI videos and ready-made video templates. Click [View all] beside a shelf to open that app.

  • AI video: Example videos made with AI. Click one, or hover it and click [Recreate], to open AI video with the prompt already filled in. To see it large first, hover it and click the icon at its top right. Nothing is generated until you click [Generate] in AI video.

  • Clip highlights: Templates for short edits. Click one to open it in the Clip highlights app.

Some apps, like Shortform Clips, are installed from Explore. Click [Install] beside the app under [Custom apps], and it then shows up in your [Apps] grid.

Apps you install from Explore update inside Selects. When an update is out, a bar at the top of the app says so, with [Update]. To check yourself, click the ... menu at the top right of the app and choose [Check for updates]. Only that app reloads when it updates, plus any open app that relies on it, so finish its current work and save its settings first.

Note: Updating apps from inside Selects needs the latest version of Selects.

FAQs

Where did the Tools tab go?

The Tools tab is now the [Apps] tab. It sits in the same place, beside [Project] at the top of the project panel, and holds the same tools plus the new built-in apps.

Why does Cut filler words say "This app isn't available for this timeline"?

Cut filler words is not available for a timeline when none of its footage was transcribed in English. Switch to a draft with English footage and the app comes back as you left it.
