Adjust clips in Selects: position, color, speed, and audio

Learn how the Adjust tab changes with what you select, and how to set position, color, masks, speed, volume, and keyframes.

Written by Nandita Kothari

The [Adjust] tab is where you fine-tune whatever is selected on the timeline. It sits in the right-hand panel, beside [Transcript], and shows different settings for footage, audio, text, captions, and transitions.

What you see depends on what you select

Select something on the timeline, then click [Adjust]. With nothing selected, the tab reads "Select a clip".

You select

Adjust shows

A video clip, image, or generated clip

[Video] (Position, Opacity, Color & Tone, Mask, and any effects on the clip), [Audio] for clips with sound, and [Speed]

An audio clip

[Audio] and [Speed]

Text, a sticker, or a motion graphic

Position, Opacity, and that graphic's own settings, like text, font, and color

Caption clips

[Caption], [Style], [BG], [Animation], and [Speaker]

A transition

The transition type and [Duration]

Several clips at once

Only the settings they all share. Values that differ read "Mixed"

A clip on a synced timeline

[Audio] and [Speed] only. Once the synced timeline is analyzed, they are locked

Tip: Adjust opens on its own when you select text, a graphic, or a transition, or when you click a clip in the preview. For footage you select on the timeline, click the [Adjust] tab yourself.

Position and opacity

To move, resize, or rotate a clip, use Position on the [Video] tab.

  • X and Y: Move the clip, in pixels from the center of the frame.

  • Scale: Resize from 1% to 400%.

  • Rotation: Turn the clip, or click the rotate button for 90 degrees at a time.

  • Flip: Flip horizontally or vertically.

  • Opacity: Fade the clip from 0% to 100%.

Drag a number's label to scrub it, or click the number and type. You can also drag the clip's handles in the preview.

Color & Tone

To color grade footage, click the + on Color & Tone, then work in one of four views of the same grade.

  • [Basic]: Sliders for temperature, tint, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, and more

  • [HSL]: Hue, saturation, and luminance for six color ranges

  • [Wheels]: Color wheels for shadows, midtones, and highlights

  • [Curves]: RGB, red, green, and blue curves

Hold the eye icon to see the shot without the grade. To reuse a grade on other clips, click [Save to Filter], then add it from the [Filters] tab of the Effects app.

Note: Color & Tone is for footage: video, images, and generated clips. It isn't offered for text, stickers, captions, or clips on a synced timeline. For a one-click start, add [Auto grade] from the Effects app.

Mask

To show only part of a clip, click the + on Mask. Choose a [Shape] (rectangle, circle, split, stars, heart, or text), then set its size, position, rotation, round corners, and feather. Click [Edit in canvas] to drag the mask in the preview, and turn on Inverse to flip what's hidden.

Audio and speed

  • [Audio]: Set the clip's volume from -60 dB to +12 dB.

  • [Speed]: Set speed from 25% to 1000%, or type a new [Duration] and let Selects work out the speed. Turn on [Preserve audio pitch] to keep voices natural.

You can also right-click a clip and choose [Audio gain/volume] or [Speed / Duration] to jump straight to these.

Animate with keyframes

To animate a setting over time, add keyframes. Position, Scale, Rotation, Opacity, and Volume can be keyframed.

  1. Select one clip and move the playhead to where the change should start.

  2. Click the diamond next to the setting to add a keyframe.

  3. Move the playhead, then change the value. Selects adds a second keyframe for you.

Use the arrows on either side of the diamond to jump between keyframes. Click the diamond on a keyframe to remove it. Right-click the diamond to choose how the change eases: [Linear], [Ease In], [Ease Out], or [Ease], or choose [Show Graph] to shape the curve yourself.

Note: Zooms from the Effects app are Scale keyframes, so you edit them here. Color, masks, filters, and speed can't be keyframed.

Reset or remove a change

  • Reset a section: Click the reset icon in the header of Position, Opacity, Audio, or Speed. Resetting Position also clears its keyframes, including zooms.

  • Reset one slider: Double-click it.

  • Remove a grade, mask, filter, or effect: Click the trash icon, [Remove], on its section.

  • Undo: Every change in Adjust is part of your normal undo history.

Export your adjustments

Everything you set in Adjust is rendered into your video when you click [Export], then [Video]. Color, masks, effects, keyframes, and volume changes don't carry over when you hand off to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve. Click [Export only] at the bottom of the Adjust tab to see what a handoff supports. Learn more in Export your edit to editing software, or as a transcript or video.

FAQs

Why can't I see the Adjust tab?

The [Adjust] tab shows when a draft or synced timeline is open. If you're only viewing a source file with no draft open, open a draft first.

Why is Color & Tone missing?

Color & Tone is missing when the selection includes something that isn't footage, such as text, a sticker, a caption, or an audio clip, or when you're on a synced timeline. Select only video or image clips on a draft.

Why are the keyframe buttons unavailable?

The keyframe buttons are unavailable when more than one clip is selected, or when the playhead is outside the selected clip. Select one clip and move the playhead onto it.

Can I crop a clip?

Adjust doesn't have a crop control. To hide part of a clip, add a Mask, or use Scale and Position to reframe it.

Can I copy a color grade to another clip?

To copy a color grade to another clip, click [Save to Filter] under Color & Tone, then add the saved filter to the other clip from the [Filters] tab of the Effects app. You can also select several clips and grade them together.

Can I change speed gradually within a clip?

Speed can't be keyframed, so a clip plays at one speed from start to end. To change speed partway through, split the clip with the Razor and set a different speed on each part.
