Import Footage and Create a New Project

How to start a new project by dropping a folder into Selects. Covers supported file types, folder structure tips, and what happens after import.

You shot 3 hours of interview footage across three cameras. Now you need to organize it, sync it, and find the moments that matter. Selects handles that entire first phase.

Getting Started

When you open Selects, you see a home screen with a Drop files or folder area in the center. Drag your footage here to start a new project. You can drop individual video files, a folder containing multiple files, or a mix of video and audio files. Selects accepts everything in one drop.

How Import Works

Once you drop files, Selects begins scanning. The app reads each file, detects its type (video, audio, or image), and starts organizing automatically. This scan typically takes a few minutes depending on your file count and sizes.

Each import creates a single project. If you want to work on multiple shoots or sequences, create separate projects by dropping files into Selects multiple times.

File Support

Selects accepts most professional video and audio formats. We support MOV, MP4, MKV, AVI, WAV, AAC, and more. For the complete list of supported formats and technical specs, see System Requirements.

Project Size Limits

Each project can contain up to 8 hours of footage. If your shoot exceeds that, split it across multiple projects and sync them separately.

Reviewing Your Organization

Open the organization screen to see all your files grouped by type. Each group shows thumbnails, duration, and file names. If Selects miscategorized a file, drag it to the correct category or right-click the folder to change it. Proper classification helps the AI focus on the right content and makes sync more reliable.

If auto-organization doesn't get it right, you can fix it from the Source Files panel on the left. Right-click a folder or file to remove it from the Main Timeline, or move it to B-roll or Sound. You can also drag clips directly on the Main Timeline to regroup them into multicam or move them to a different category.
